Sir Michael Caine
London’s Favourite Londoner
It sounds unremarkable to say that Maurice Mickelwhite turns 80
this year. Even if it’s actually Sir Maurice and he was once voted
London’s favourite Londoner.
Maurice is of course better known by his stage name. His name is Sir Michael Caine and he will celebrate his 80th birthday in March. The man and the occasion are to be recognised with an Exhibition at The Museum of London and special screenings at The Museum of London Docklands. Both promise to be well worth a visit.
The exhibition intends to celebrate the influence of London on the life and career of Sir Michael. From humble working-class beginnings to celebrated international movie star. Visitors will have the chance to see a number of photographs including iconic portraits from acclaimed photographers David Bailey and Terry O’Neill to be exhibited for the first time. Also part of the exhibition will be both audio and video footage from some of his best known films including The Italian Job, Get Carter, Educating Rita and Hannah and Her Sisters. The exhibition runs from 8th March – 14th July and The Museum of London can be found at 150 London Wall in The City, just a short walk from either St. Paul’s or Barbican underground stations.
Around the same time and to complement the exhibition, The Museum of London Docklands will be hosting “Caine on Screen” from April to July. The film series will show the top 4 Michael Caine films as voted for by the public. There are certainly plenty of titles to choose from in a diverse career including over 100 movies. From leading men to voiceovers, from Alfie to Alfred in a collection that now spans 6 decades.
He is quoted as saying, “First of all I choose the great roles, and if none of these come, I choose the mediocre ones and if they don’t come, I choose the ones that pay the rent. I haven’t seen Jaws:The Revenge but by all accounts it’s terrible. I have seen the house it built though and that’s terrific!”
Not forgetting of course that Michael Caine has a multitude of awards and nominations to his name. Golden Globes, Emmys, BAFTAs and of course 2 Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and 4 further Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. He was also awarded the BAFTA Fellowship in 2000.
It might take some consideration but anyone can cast their Top 4 vote via the Museum of London Docklands website with the results to be announced on 14th March.
It has been a long, colourful and distinguished career for one of London’s favourite sons. The exhibition titled – ‘Michael Caine’ at The Museum of London and ‘Caine on Screen’ at the Museum of London Docklands both offer a fitting celebration of the man, his life and his career. So far! We’re looking forward to it and what’s more, admission to both is free.
