A Premier League Summer

The 2013 Premier League season ended last weekend and there is no World Cup for fans to look forward to – that’s next Summer.  No European Championships – that was last Summer. Domestic football in the top flight doesn’t return until August 17. For supporters used to seeing their team in action twice a week for most of 10 months there are cold-turkey days ahead.

Not to despair though because this Summer promises some off-field transaction to rival the on-field action. Of the top 6 Premier League clubs, 4 will change their manager. Manchester City dismissed Roberto Mancini, Rafael Benitez’ often turbulent tenure at Chelsea has expired as agreed, Sir Alex Ferguson has abdicated the throne of Champions Manchester United and David Moyes has left Everton to take over from Ferguson.

Jose Mourhino is hotly tipped to return to Chelsea having left Real Madrid and Manuel Pellegrini is expected to be in charge at Manchester City before too long. Vacancies and uncertainty at power-houses old and new like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Monaco, Malaga and Paris St.Germain all add to the intrigue of who might go where. Managers and players alike.

It’s easy then to forget that Pep Guardiola will resume his spectacular managerial career after a year off. He takes over at Bayern Munich next season, the same Bayern Munich that will contest the Champions League Final with their compatriots Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Guardiola then could join Bayern exactly as he left his beloved Barcelona; as Champions of Europe.

Most new managers particularly at the top will be given money to spend. In the case of Manchester City and Chelsea it is likely to be a lot of money. United might want to signal their own intent with another headline signing and if rumours are correct, and they sometimes are, Arsenal are ready to spend £70.00 million this Summer. Competition for the best players will be fiercer than ever. Let’s not forget that not one English team made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League this season. The time is now for the top clubs in England to strike back decisively and they know it. There is also a feeling that they need to.

The same feeling exists at home too. Change and upheaval at the top clubs can bring new pressures to each. Only one thing is certain – it can’t turn out well for all of them. Tottenham, Everton and an improving Liverpool will also sense a better opportunity to return to the Top 4. Their first priority is to hang on to star players before adding to their own squads. They are sure to approach the new season with a renewed determination borne of the uncertainties above them.

All that to come but first the small matter of the Champions League Final at Wembley this Saturday evening. If you are lucky enough to have tickets, last minute or otherwise you can make a Capital weekend of it by staying at Sanctum Apartments, a J&K Apartments favourite.

London in June

Things to Do in London this June

If you are coming to London next month, there are lots of fun and interesting events taking place.  Here are a few of our suggestions of what’s on in London in June and the surrounding areas;

Hampton Court Palace Festival - takes place between 13th – 24th June at Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace Festival is returning for its 21st year with 10 nights of concerts, the Hampton Court Palace Festival is one for the older generation. Playing for two nights of the festival, British icon Sir Cliff Richard headlines the event which takes place in the open-air court of King Henry VIII’s Palace. The line-up also boasts the likes of Russell Watson, the UK’s bestselling classical artist; blues rock duo Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart, who will make their festival debut this year; and the internationally acclaimed Bjorn Again, bringing a night of ABBA to the event. Jools Holland, now a veteran of this annual festival, will also return to perform with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Guests can bring their own hampers with champers or take advantage of the pre-ordered picnic options on offer. Drinks and more basic meal options are also available from stalls, while those who want to go the whole hog can opt for the hospitality package in the Hampton Court State Apartments which includes VIP seating, a champagne reception with canapés and a dinner including fine wines.

Royal Ascot - takes place between the 18th -22nd June at Royal Ascot racecourse, Berkshire
Royal Ascot returns to the Berkshire racecourse where it has pretty much been an annual fixture since 1711. With nearly £4.00 million in prize money at stake, this meeting attracts all the biggest names in the racing fraternity, and, of course, more than 300,000 visitors, all dressed in their finest attire. Ascot is as famous for its hats as it is for the racing, especially on Ladies’ Day. Every year the ladies try to outdo each other with tremendous towering creations and outlandish designs. The gents usually go for a more understated look – with morning suits and top hats the norm. It’s as much a giant outdoor party as a race meet: punters at the track will drink over 150,000 bottles of champagne, 14,000 bottles of Pimm’s and, of course, will place untold millions in bets.   If you can get a room during this time, a great country hotel is Coworth Park Hotel part of The Dorchester Collection.  It is not cheap but an excellent five star hotel with an a wonderful spa and restaurant.  For more casual dining, book The Barn restaurant which has an excellent lunch and dinner menu.  You can horse ride on the beautiful ground of the estate too.

Open Gardens Squares Weekend – takes place on the 8th and 9th June
From the iron fenced residential parks of west London to the landscaped churchyards of the City, hundreds of garden squares play a vital part in maintaining London’s status as one of Europe’s greenest cities. This wonderful weekend is the one time of the year when these gardens open their gates to members of the public.  A lovely idea as many of these private spaces are not accessible to the public for the rest of the year. Over 200 gardens typically take part and many of the gardens put on activities for the children too.  The Downing Street Garden will also be open.

Polo in the Park – takes place 7th – 10th June at Hurlingham Park
Now in its fifth year, ‘Polo in the Park’ is quickly becoming one of London’s great summer outdoors events. Aimed at bringing polo to the people, the three day World Series event showcases a more accessible version of the sport, mirroring the effect Twenty20 has had on cricket. Teams of three from cities around the world take part; this year sees London, Delhi, Buenos Aires and Sydney all competing. There’s usually also a steady flow of celebrities (Jodie Kidd) and royalty (Princess Beatrice), medieval jousting and an array of bars, shops and food stalls.

English National Ballet’s Swan Lake takes place 12th – 23rd June at The Royal Albert Hall
Derek Deane’s critically acclaimed in the round production of ‘Swan Lake’ is revived at London’s most magical venue after a successful run at the Coliseum last summer. The English National Ballet will join with international guest artists to share the lead roles of Odette/Odile and Prince Siegfried, and the stage will be flooded with 120 performers and 60 swans to create a large-scale “ravishing and sumptuous spectacle” (The Sunday Times).

London Serviced Apartments for The Chelsea Flower Show

 The Chelsea Flower Show 2013

The Chelsea Flower Show 2013 takes place on 21st – 25th May.  It is located at Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, London, SW3 4SR.

This is undoubtedly the greatest flower show in the world at London’s Royal Hospital, Chelsea.  As 2013 marks the centenary of the Chelsea Flower Show, it is going to make this year’s event, extra-special.

Every year the grounds of the Royal Hospital are transformed into show gardens, inspirational small gardens and vibrant horticultural displays for the world’s most famous flower show. The Chelsea Flower Show is attended by 157,000 visitors each year. The tickets must be purchased in advance and the number is limited by the capacity of the 11-acre ground.

The show has become an important venue for watching emerging gardening trends. Not only are new plants launched, the popularity of older varieties revived. It’s the garden design equivalent of Paris Fashion Week.

It does mean, however that most apartments and hotels in Chelsea and Knightsbridge are completely fully booked for these dates!  J&K Apartments however, have many apartment options ‘up our sleeve’ to offer our guests that really are in very close proximity to Chelsea. Perhaps no more than 5-10 minutes by taxi or tube.

We do still have some availability at The Apartments by The Sloane Club, Knightsbridge.
Another lovely boutique hotel, J&K Apartments love to recommend is The Knightsbridge Hotel.  Located on Beaufort Gardens, this is a delight.  This hotel is well priced luxury accommodation with all the trimmings. Otherwise you could always try the Royal Garden Hotel on Kensington High Street.  This is a very large hotel of an excellent standard.  Located right next to and overlooking Kensington Gardens and with taxi’s right outside, this is a good option.  Kensington underground is also within a 5 minute walk of the hotel.

So do call us on +44(0)1797 253 823 or enquire@jandkapartments.com  for any accommodation you may need.  We will always look after you.  We will always do our best to help.  That’s what the team at J&K do!
